Time is Money – It’s a Lie

Time is money. You’ve heard it a million times by the time you reach thirty. Pickup any motivational book, any book on productivity and you’ll see it right there, probably in chapter one, “Time is money.”

On the surface most of us agree, we nod our heads and wrap our minds around the fact each of us only has 24 hours in a day and how we spend that 24 hours will determine our wealth.

I’m here to tell you the axiom, “Time is money is a big fat LIE.”

Let’s face it, time is time; how we choose to use that time is what determines much and money is only one thing determined by time.

Here’s what I mean. Time is also value; the value you have in yourself.

My friend Dan Kennedy points out in his book The Ultimate Success Secret how author Stuart Wilde used to always say, “When they show up, bill ‘em.” Meaning your time is valuable and as a businessman you’re overriding attitude must be anything you do must lead to billable time or—money.

How we see ourselves, the value we place on ourselves is important to our success. And if we see ourselves as important and relevant, then we will value our time and each day we’ll plan our day to consistently add value to our business and our self-esteem.

Self-esteem comes from our inner selves. It’s how we see ourselves, not how others see us. If we look in the mirror and see an important person, an up and coming entrepreneur, then we value much about ourselves. We value our opinions, our decisions, and our time. If we value our decisions, opinions, and time it’s easy for us to project an image and a lifestyle that mirrors our value.

On the other hand, if we look in the mirror and see a loser, the wimpy kid, the clumsy klutz then that’s the image we project to others. You’re the guy who carries a phone everywhere. You’re the guy with the pager, the answering service and the phone next to your bed. Your time isn’t valuable it’s given to anyone who asks and if you make money, great, but if you don’t well whatcha gonna do you loser…

Time isn’t money your self-image is.

What you see inside yourself is more valuable than an hour, a minute or a second of your day. Until you come to grips with who you are and what you’re capable of, you’re stuck in a crappy hole with no value to yourself or others.

Before you can make it big or otherwise in business you must convince yourself you’re a winner capable of great things. You must put aside negative labels that have plagued you since childhood. A great place to start is with Dr. Maxwell Maltz’ book Psycho-Cybernetics. A seminal book for over 60 years this book has helped thousands rebuild themselves and move forward in business, sports, politics, any profession you choose.

Success starts from inside and time only becomes money when you use it to add value to your self-image. Take the time to build self-esteem and money will follow.
