The Real Secret of Affiliate Marketing (Part 2)

shareasaleIn last week’s post we talked briefly about finding the real secret to affiliate marketing. This week we cover the first scenario where you have a product or service to sell but not a HUGE list of followers on your website or blog.

For our purpose let’s say it you have an eBook entitled, “How to make millions of dollars on yard sales.” You’ve done the research, you’ve written the book and published it in several formats for readers to download. You plan to sell the eBook for $49.95

As did your research and wrote the book you also came up with an idea for a downloadable training program as well as providing exclusive seminars designed to walk your buyers through a step-by-step process on how to set up “killer” yard sales.

So what do you do now, what’s your marketing strategy?

Large businesses will spent thousands, and in some cases millions, of dollars to access lists of prospects aimed at selling their products. Lists that are gleaned from databases according to age, sex, interest in their products and a myriad of other categories designed to specifically target those most willing to purchase a product.

I know, you’re saying, “that’s all well and good, but as a small business owner…or neophyte author, how am I going to get access to those kinds of lists?”

Affiliate marketing to the rescue.

Chances are, you’re not. But what you will have access to, through affiliate brokers such as ShareaSale, is a database full of people with lists that can shotgun, or pinpoint (based upon their interests) prospects.

If you have a limited marketing base, affiliate sites such as ShareaSale, ClickBank and CJ Affiliate by Conversant (formerly Commission Junction) can give you access to hundreds, if not thousands of affiliates with THOUSANDS if not hundreds of thousands of email

Here’s how it works. You place your eBook for sale at $49.95 on ShareaSale. You’re willing to pay a commission to each affiliate marketer…the ones with the lists…$19.95 for each sale they make from their prospect lists. Let’s say conservatively those marketers interested in your product have a total of 200,000 personal contacts. We know of single websites that have that number of email subscribers. Let’s say there are a total of five marketers who each purchase your eBook, read it, get excited about it and send a broadcast message to their contacts. Those 200,000 people we discussed.

Now let’s say you have a 1.5% conversion rate on those emails. That means 3,000 sales of your eBook. How’s the math look? At $49.99 × 3000 =  $149, 850 less the $59,850 commissions to you marketers….you walk away with $90,000. Do you have any idea how many “conventional” authors would LOVE to walk away with that payday?

CLICKBANKThe frosting on the cake, however, is the 3,000 new contacts you just generated for future sales of your training program and webinars. If you have a garage sale blog, if garage sales are your passion, you can sign up each and every customer who bought your book and provided their email to you (which they had to do to purchase your eBook) tidbits of information about garage sales and how to make them work. You can keep in contact with your fans and when you’re ready to roll out your training program, you can make them the first offer—and now instead of paying marketers that commission, you keep whatever you get from your sales THEN you go to your marketers.
