What You Didn’t Know About Your Presidents

What You Didn’t Know
About Your Presidents

The United States has seen 44 presidents since the Constitution established the office and was established in 1789.

I thought I’d spend this President’s Day telling you a few things you probably didn’t know about some of our past presidents and reference them to current events.

President George Washington

President George Washington

George Washington, our first president, warned the new nation of becoming involved in “foreign intrigue”. He believed we should be a nation of “honest brokers” much like the Swiss. He suggested we have no treaties or compacts and should be involved in trade with every other nation. Question: What would George Washington think of our ties with NATO and SEATO, today?

James Madison, one of the authors of the US Constitution vetoed the Bonus Bill of 1817. This bill called for funds to finance roads, bridges, and canals. Congress believed under the “General Welfare” provision it had the power to tax its citizens to establish such infrastructure. In Madison’s words: Read the rest of this entry

The trooper looks out over the HESCO barriers and barbed wire—it’s a view you’d have to see to believe. The road winds its way along the valley floor next to the dry wadi. No dust on the road means no cars or trucks…maybe a few hours of piece.

He takes in a deep breath and sighs, the smell of dust and sewage is thick in the air. Although its late November the sun still burns during the day and nights are bitterly cold; it’s like a light switch going from hot to freezing after sunset.

His stomach growls, a bit louder than the last one, the hunger pangs of a young man far from home and the empty place in his heart so far from family. Time to eat and reflect on home.

All across the world young men and women will spend this Thanksgiving at remote outposts.

At a time we celebrate and give thanks to whatever deity we may worship—or not; at a time when we are surrounded by family and friends, please take a moment when you say your Thanksgiving Day prayers and give thanks for those young men and women on freedom’s frontier. Read the rest of this entry

What I’d like to explore today is a FAIRLY easy system that can get you up and running a blog in no time for little or NO cash—WordPress.

First, what is WordPress?

WordPress is an open source (free) software tool specifically designed for blogging. It essentially provides a template system that allows users to install and change themes that give the look and feel to the blog.

A system of plugins allow users to add over 30,000 features to their blogs.

WordPress comes in two varieties: WordPress.org and WordPress.com.

What’s the difference? Glad you asked! Read the rest of this entry

4 Rules to Follow When Deciding, “What’s Your Message?”

Today we read and hear about target marketing; magnetic marketing, relationship marketing, permission marketing and I could go on.

What's Your Message?

What’s Your Message?

Marketing greats such as Dan Kennedy, Seth Godin, and others have broken the code, so to speak, on what it takes to connect with your client or customer.

Breaking the code is easy: As a business owner you MUST communicate your message to your targeted client or customer to draw them to you and build a relationship.

Implementing the code—not so easy. Read the rest of this entry

What’s Your Market?

What’s Your Market?

Is This The Right Market?

In my last post I talked about knowing who your ideal customer may be. See: Start With The Who.

If you’re just starting a business a good place to start is by identifying your ideal customer. If your business has stalled or peaked, perhaps you need to re-evaluate who your customer really is.

While identifying that ideal customer is important, in Eric Ries’ book, The Lean Startup, he relates how many business startups fail because they misidentify their ideal client.

In fact, the new business may have gone to great lengths to pinpoint their ideal customer only to fail miserably because their model customer wasn’t interested in the startup’s product or service.

Needless to say this can be pretty frustrating.

Start With The Who—7 Questions That Can Increase Profits

How would you like to make MORE money in your business with LESS clients or customers? Would you rather have 1000 people

7 Questions

7 Questions

purchasing $10 ten percent of the time or have 200 people purchasing $50 fifty percent of the time?

Sound impossible, well it’s not if you have properly identified your ideal client or customer.

“Start with the who then work backwards”—profound words from marketing genius Dan Kennedy.

According to Dan, the most important thing a business owner can do is to take time to learn EXACTLY who is their ideal customer.

My youngest son is a retail store manager in a Las Vegas mall. He’s been involved with retail since his college days at the University of Reno.

He started his retail career a salesperson working at the Reno Apple retail store where he managed to move up the ladder from salesperson to training manager in that store.

It isn’t hard to make the stretch that his background in Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps helped establish the leadership skills he’s used to become successful in retail.

After a couple of years with Apple he took a position as assistant manager  and then manager for a major audio retail store in Northern Nevada.
