How NOT to Market Your Business

How Not to Market Your Business

How Not to Market Your Business

Does this sound familiar? You opt-in to a website in order to receive a free report, white paper, booklet, etc. Per the instructions, you confirm your opt-information and are directed to a link or soon thereafter receive another email with the lead magnet you wanted.

Smart marketers use lead magnets as a way to get your name and email address; and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this as long as you receive the item or items you’ve requested!

Let’s face it, if I can get free information for providing a name and email address, why not. If I don’t care for the information I receive I can always (1) unsubscribe to the sender and/or (2) blacklist the sender’s email address. Lead magnets are a legitimate way for you the consumer to be introduced to a new provider.

If you make the decision to not opt out and the next day you’re email is inundated with a million emails selling you this that or the other thing from the provider, you’ll probably change your mind. Read the rest of this entry

Student Loans — They’re a Racket

Student Loans — They’re a Racket

Student Loan Racket

Student Loans are a Racket

Did you know it takes a college degree to work the counter at a major car rental agency? I’ve got one question; why?

Answer: College, and the student loans that fund them, is a racket. What was once seen as the step to a brighter future has become nothing more than a money-grubbing enterprise hiding behind a sheepskin.

I have both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. I’m also pushing 60 — and times have changed.

Why do I say student loans and college are a racket, well in the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo, “Let me ‘splain.” Read the rest of this entry

Read This Or Lose Your Internet!

quote-our-liberty-depends-on-the-freedom-of-the-press-and-that-cannot-be-limited-without-being-lost-thomas-jefferson-240480
NOTE: I wrote this article last week before the horrible attacks on innocent people in France. The fact that the initial attack was on a news magazine who had published material offensive to a group of people, in my opinion, is no excuse for these acts of barbarism. As the old saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” It wasn’t the words from Charlie Hebdo that killed all those people; it was hateful and intolerant men with no concept of freedom of the press or freedom of speech. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims of these petty little men and we stand today and proclaim:

Je Suis Charlie!

Today, in light of events in France, we must be even more vigilant in our protection of free speech and a free press. In the coming days and months be alert for officials, editors, and others who will say we should not allow expression such as that which caused the deaths of so many in France. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance so stand ready to refuse to bend to those who would put security over freedom. Now to what I wrote last week. Read the rest of this entry

Dare To Be Respected!

Dare To Be Respected

Dan Kennedy has a saying when it comes to business leaders, “You need to trade being liked, for being respected.” As harsh as that may seem, he’s got a point. The problem with being liked in business is people have a tendency to use you as a door mat.

We’ve all heard that the best way to get respect is to give respect. Up to a point I agree. In theory that’s a great idea. Let’s look at reality.

Michael Masterson in his book, Ready, Fire, Aim points out there are two different types of business people. The ones who need to win at all costs and those who know that winning by walking over people may get you rich, but at the end of the day it doesn’t SUSTAIN business.

If you’re dealing with the “winning at all cost” types, you can respect them all you want, they’ll never respect you…instead, they’ll walk all over you at the first chance. So what’s the answer?

It’s human nature to want to be liked. When you own a business, it’s only natural to want to be liked. We believe being liked means more business. This idea ain’t necessarily so. In business what we’re really looking for is our ideal client or customer. Read the rest of this entry

What Drives Our Nation?

What Drives Our Nation?

“Don’t let anyone tell you…that it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs.” Hillary Clinton at a campaign event Friday, 24 October 2014, for Martha Coakly.

My youngest son is a retail store manager in a Las Vegas mall. He’s been involved with retail since his college days at the University of Reno.

He started his retail career a salesperson working at the Reno Apple retail store where he managed to move up the ladder from salesperson to training manager in that store.

It isn’t hard to make the stretch that his background in Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps helped establish the leadership skills he’s used to become successful in retail.

After a couple of years with Apple he took a position as assistant manager  and then manager for a major audio retail store in Northern Nevada.

Memorial Day Reflection

Memorial Day Reflection

Memorial Day 2014

Memorial Day 2014

I’d like to take a break this week from our current series on The Real Secret of Affiliate Marketing to wish our American readers a wonderful Memorial Day.

I ask that each of you take the time to reflect on the freedoms you have today that were bought and paid for by the blood of fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen in our nation’s history.

Today is a day to put away petty political bickering and party dogma so that we honor the sacrifice of the men and women in our 250-plus year history who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Say a prayer for those families who have lost loved ones in recent wars and conflicts.

Finally, I ask that you enjoy your barbeque, picnic, or the Indy 500. One of the greatest ways to honor our fallen is to live each day to its fullest; to raise our families to always strive to do our best and live life. Carpe Diem! Seize the day!

From the Empowered Pros, have a great Memorial Day and we’ll see you next week for Part 3 of The Real Secret of Affiliate Marketing.

How Safe is Your Business?

How Safe is Your Business?

As the United States heads into an election this year many small business owners are asking how safe is their business.

How Safe is Your Business?

Government regulations from state, local and federal sources have continued to put a damper on new start-up businesses as well as established businesses.

Regulations contained in the “Affordable Healthcare Act”, sometimes referred to as “Obamacare” seem to target small business owners and force them to pay more than “their fair share”, especially when it comes to paying employees for healthcare. It is somewhat ironic that what started as a way to get around government regulations has become an even greater burden for business owners.

Did you know during the Great Depression, the Roosevelt administration froze all pay raises for employees under the National Reform Act? Employers were not allowed to give employees pay raises; if they did employers could be imprisoned. To keep good employees and help provide for their employees’ families business owners turned to increasing benefits over pay and began providing health insurance as incentives.

Big Little Ideas

Big Little Ideas—What Turns Little Ideas into Big Dollars?

Big Little Ideas

Anyone with a dream can relate to little ideas that turn into big dollars. Americans especially are enamored with people who come essentially out of nowhere and make it big. One of my favorite examples are Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. These guys changed the world with a big little idea…the desktop computer.

I know it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t so long ago we didn’t have things like laptop computers, iPads, iPhones, etc., etc.

Now I’m not going to rehash the success Wozniak and Jobs had with Apple. A $600 billion company doesn’t need my help.

What I’d like to discuss is what turns ideas into reality.

Look around you. Every restaurant, every franchise, every major or minor business in this country began as one thing. Do you know what it is? an idea…I said AN IDEA! Read the rest of this entry

Can You Help the Economy?

Can You Help the Economy?

Can You Help the Economy

Can You Help the Economy?

Now that’s a question…can YOU help the economy and if so, how? In case you haven’t noticed, the U.S. economy has been in the doldrums for quite some time now. In fact the world economy is in one hell of mess.

We get conflicting reports from the media about are we or are we not in a recovery. I’ll leave that question unanswered because I’m sure you have your own opinion one way or another. Regardless of where you stand on a recovery the economy can ALWAYS use a boost from dedicated individuals willing to help out, right?

Haven’t we been encouraged by political leaders to, “Spend heavily so we can encourage business growth and get put more people back to work.” Isn’t the U.S. government trying to “spend” its way out of the fiscal mess we find ourselves in? Hmmm take a look at this video: Stop Spending Our Future Read the rest of this entry
