The Real Secret of Affiliate Marketing (Part 1)

Affiliate MarketingIf you have a blog or marketable item to sell, affiliate marketing could be just what you’re looking for to reach your prospects. Affiliate marketing gives the online entrepreneur the ability to tie into other marketers and websites such as Amazon.com, ClickBank, Commission Junction, etc. and make money by selling products through your website or your email contacts AND through other websites and email contacts.

How does it work? Glad you asked.

Most neophyte web marketers believe they can simply build a website or blog then sign up for a few affiliate programs and roll in the dough. The hope and pray people will show up on their site and magically folks will be interested in what they’re selling. In an effort to drive traffic to your site and build up your unique hits per page, you’re willing to spend a lot of time and money taking advice from the “pros”. The sad truth is, while there are plenty of “experts” out there who will sell you their latest how-to “get-rich-quick” as an affiliate program and ways to make money on the Internet…99.9% of these guys are selling…well, to put it bluntly, CRAP.

It’s the old adage, “If it sounds/looks too good to be true, it probably is.” Read the rest of this entry

E-Commerce and a New Beginning

E-Commerce and a New Beginning

After a long hiatus from our blog and a year plus of e-commerce experience through our Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon), it’s time to step back and evaluate what we’ve learned over the past 18 months. Like so many of my friends and relatives we were lured to the Internet with the hopes of building a business that would eventually replace our full-time incomes we’re not seeing the results we expected. We ARE making money…BUT…just barely breaking even at this point. Again, like so many of our friends and relatives…and I’m sure many of you, what we found was a maze rather than a road map to success.

Like so many novices we were inundated with “the latest and greatest” method to build a successful online business. Many of those who approached us were nothing more than multi-level marketing companies trying to disguise themselves as legitimate business opportunities. Others were pitch men with the latest and greatest software “guaranteed” to get your website to number one on a Google search. Sound familiar?

It seems every “successful” entrepreneur who can spell e-commerce has made at least $100,000 their first year and for the low, low price of $xxx they’ll share how they became successful—right!

Stay Laser Focused On Your Business

Stay Laser Focused On Your Business

One of the biggest complaints new business owners have is that of being OVERWHELMED. Online businesses are notorious for

Stay Laser Focused On Your Business

being bombarded by emails, salespeople, offers, you name it. What starts as a business to sell a product on the Internet ends up as an affiliate site, a blog, and a repository for everything BUT what you originally wanted when you start.

Add to the fact that most online business owners know absolutely nothing, nada, zip, zilch about online business; add in not so savory anything goes marketers and not only are you inundated with overwhelming information but losing money at a phenomenal rate chasing the next shiny new object that will have you earning “five figures in 30-days”.

Really? While we’d all like to be there don’t forget to use some good old fashioned common sense. Stay laser focused don’t let smooth talk distract you!

As an online business owner you must absolutely remain laser focused on the  original intent of your business.

By remaining laser focused on your business you will see your business grow at a much faster and steadier pace. Chasing after the newest latest and greatest idea only leads to frustration.

That being said, however, business owners must also stay abreast of new and emerging technologies, ideas, etc. that may become the next Facebook or Google. Every new or innovative idea needs to be measured against your original ideas, business plan, or business model. More importantly, you need to ask yourself, “Does this new idea increase customer satisfaction and/or increase profits? Does this new idea create, in Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad model, an asset or liability for your business?

Learning about your business, learning to build your business, and yourself are worthwhile and necessary for online business. Remember to eat the elephant one bite at a time, however, and don’t try to learn everything at once.

Some of the best advice I’ve ever received when it comes to learning was to read only one book at a time. That’s a thank you to Timothy Ferriss by-the-way. My library is FILLED with hundreds (300 plus at last count from a yard sale we had several weeks ago) of books at least half dedicated to building business, personal improvement, and motivation. If I had not remained laser focused on where I want my business to go…I would have been overwhelmed. If I had tried to read several different non-fiction books at once…I would have been overwhelmed.

Again, by staying laser focused on your business’ original intent will help you from becoming overwhelmed.

Staying laser focused on your business helps if you have goals. If you started your business and wrote down business goals—BONUS! Goals will help you stay on track and give you a sounding board to use for evaluating potential new projects.

Finally, one of the greatest things about cyberspace is the free and uncensored information available to anyone willing to look. One of the WORST things about cyberspace is not only the overwhelming amount of information but the lack of credible review. Let the buyer beware!

Do your homework, remain laser focused on your business and its goals and I’ll see you on the beaches of the world!

It’s All About You

It’s All About You

It's All About You

In Chris Guillebeau’s recently released book, The $100 Startup, he explains that the most successful business owners he interviewed for his book had two key themes.

1. They were looking for freedom.

2. Giving value was the way to achieve their freedom.

Giving value makes this blog site all about you.

Most people who write blogs do so to share their experiences, likes, dislikes, etc. with others. Blogs are generally personal journals written by millions of people with something to say and wishing to be heard.

The majority of blogs are a one-way street. The blogger writes, the reader reads, and perhaps if the reader adamantly agrees or disagrees they will post a comment.

How To Lose Money Online

Lose Money Online?—Here’s How

An Easy Way to Lose Money Online

I was at a craft brewery recently while on an out-of-town trip. Located in a small town in the American Northwest, we were told they keep odd hours and may not be open if we dropped by. Since it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon we decided, what the heck, and went for it.

The brewery/restaurant was a converted home, off the main drag but easy to find and best of all, it was open. A couple of patrons were out front enjoying the sunshine and libation. From the outside the place didn’t look all that busy.

Inside we found a nice ambiance, it reminded me of an English pub (I spent five years in England sampling the local ales while in the Air Force so consider myself somewhat of an expert). The staff was pleasant and helpful but most of all the beer was EXCELLENT. Read the rest of this entry

speed. After a couple of laps, however, they slow down and all too often come to a complete stop.

This is especially noticeable with those business owners who decide to begin their online presence with a blog. After a few short weeks the blog posts slow down and after a few months will come to a complete stop.

To turn you hobby into a business YOU MUST get serious about your new endeavor.

Facebook Censorship

Today I’m going to link to a blog article form TechCrunch.com by Colleen Taylor. I believe bloggers and readers need to remain informed on what type of “policing” goes on on the Internet in order to maintain a free and open exchange of information and ideas.

We’ve seen other instances of Facebook censoring writers and this appears to be another one.

Get Organized—Or How to Eat An Elephant

Get Organized

Get Organized

Does it seem like the more you do, the more you have to do? Starting or running a home-based business can seem like that especially when you first start. It seems like you can NEVER get organized. I know, for example, that when I started my blog I thought it was going to be a pretty simple process. All I had to do was get a domain name, set up my WordPress account and I’d be off to the races.

I had no clue about things like Search Engine Optimization (SEO), syndicating, affiliate networking, and the list goes on. It seemed like the more I learned about blogging the more I needed to learn so I spent hours, days, studying the experts, reviewing software, plug-ins, and the list goes on.

So what did I do to get organized and make it a habit to blog EVERY day, learn something, EVERY day, and improve my website EVERY day? Read the rest of this entry

All Work and No Play—Why Bloggers Quit

With over 100 million blogs estimated to be online today it’s only natural that a business owner would question why a blog would be a lucrative tool to increase business. The short answer is that most bloggers don’t make it past three months.

All Work and No Play

Why not?

As you know, the goal of a blog is to bring traffic to your website, give value to those who read our blogs and develop a loyal following of readers. As a business owner, if you have identified your audience properly those followers will, hopefully, become patrons/customers at some point. If you are a network marketer or involved in a multi-level marketing company those followers could become distributors. Blogging could and should lead to a win/win situation. My How Things Have Changed—A New Old Perspective

It’s been over twelve years since I joined one of the largest multilevel marketing companies and my how things have changed. I’m sure most of you are thinking that the addition of technology is what I’m driving at and in fact you are PARTIALLY correct. Let me explain.

Twelve years ago I got a call from an acquaintance asking, “Hey Keith, do you keep your options open, are you looking to earn some extra money?”

MLM

My How Things Have Changedsome extra money?"

Sound familiar to anyone? I’m sure it does and to many of us associated with network marketing this was our introduction. From there the path was probably pretty much the same; you go to a meeting, see the marketing plan, get a “prospect kit” and go home with your head filled with circles, money, and dreams.

A day or two later you got a call from your soon-to-be sponsor or your sponsor’s sponsor, had your questions answered and then made your decision. The next step was filling out your list, start talking to all your friends and family, anyone who’d hold still long enough and HOPE you’d find someone else excited about selling vitamins or soap from home.

Years ago we joined our MLM HOPING to get rich quick! We were going to sponsor hundreds of excited friends and family and develop a RESIDUAL income that would buy us mansions, Lamborghini’s, airplanes and yachts. Read the rest of this entry
